Like many people, I feel an affinity with wood. There is something in our nature that draws us to the look and feel of wood, the harmony and comfort it imparts to our lives. I have worked with wood most of my life, having learned my craft through trial and error, but, after a lifetime of working with wood, I never cease to be amazed by the extraordinary range of color, pattern and variety revealed inside trees.

I make boxes in a variety of styles; boxes with fitted lids, boxes with hinged tops and boxes with drawers. While many are more conventional and practical in form, others allow for more expressive approaches to composition and design – thinking “outside the box” – stacking the elements as the mood strikes me. My boxes have been described as lyrical and whimsical, but always I strive to retain functionality and the highest degree of workmanship. Finally, I also do my best to be sure my design compliments and enhances the special character of the wood.

I have participated in the last 4 years and I consider it an excellent and
certainly a unique range of potential gifts for our area.

KATHLEEN BLACK

Kathleen is originally from Battle Creek, Michigan and lives with her
husband, Tony in both Melbourne, FL and Belgrade Lakes, Maine. Always
attracted to the water and the vibrant colors of Island art, it was inevitable
that, upon retiring, she manifest her creative talents into colorful Wood-Art
Fish. Her incorporation of rusted metal parts, antique instruments and tools
as well as unusual wood shapes and carvings, makes each fish unique in its
own way. No Wood-Art Fish is ever alike! Her fish have been featured in
episodes of the nationally televised DIY program MAINE CABIN MASTERS.

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED TO CREATE AND RE-CREATE AND I’M FASCINATED WITH ALL MEDIA AND PROCESSES. IN ESSENCE, I BELIEVE MY GOD GIVEN SUPERPOWER IS THAT I CAN MAKE BEAUTY!

In my professional career I traveled frequently around the U.S. I found the easiest and most compact “hotel” hobby was jewelry making. I was fortunate to find incredible sources and outlets. In retirement, I’m enjoying trying new things and “just playing”. My whole house is a studio/workroom/supply cabinet! I love finding beautifully shaped objects in nature. They always find a place in my house and in my artwork.

Peggi Nadeau

Peggi Nadeau is a studio potter, specializing in creating pieces that explore movement and surface texture. At her home studio in Mount Dora, Florida, she crafts pots and luminaries through hand-building and wheel-throwing. Most of her work is sculptural, taking form organically through the creative process. Reflective of the understated beauty and subtle complexities of nature, every piece is distinctive.

Peggi attended Penn State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design. She lives with her husband Scott and since 1997 they have operated their own branding and marketing design firm.

Rob & Diane Taylor

Our art boxes are created by the husband and wife team, Rod and Diane Taylor. We developed our skills in San Diego working in the boat building industry over thirty years building, restoring, repairing and refinishing wooden yachts! Diane does the design, assists with the woodworking mechanics of making the boxes and her specialty the fabulous finish work. Each box is coated with 5 coats of marine varnish hand sanded with 400 to 1000 grit wet and dry sandpaper, hand sanded between each coat. Rod does the heavy lifting, the cutting, milling and shaping the boxes including all the inlay work, using a scroll saw and scalpel.

We always try to use sustainable wood in all, our boxes. We buy and or harvest wood that is either storm damaged limbs or trees and veneer from sustainable wood suppliers. We air dry our wood naturally for at least two years, all this extra work and cost rewards us with some of the most beautiful grain and colors not generally scene in commercial lumber yards. We cut all, our inlays using a jeweler’s hand saw, scroll saw or scalpel!

…more to come soon!
