I was drawn to art during childhood when I was exposed to drawing lessons by one of Florida’s famous Highwaymen, A.E. Backus. I continued to appreciate the arts from afar as a student. I then worked with oils for a few years in my 20’s but abandoned it as a hobby while raising children – somehow oil paints and children did not mix for me and there was never enough time! About 7-8 years ago, a friend encouraged me to try watercolor, a medium I had always wanted to explore. Since then I have taken classes in the area, collaborated with my friend Carolyn Cherry as TOUCAN and shown in several of the Florida Art Festivals, specifically Cocoa Beach Art Festival, Vero Beach Under the Oaks, the Melbourne Art Fair and Mt Dora Art Show. In 2006 a TOUCAN painting was selected as the poster/T-shirt winner for the Cocoa Beach Arts Festival.
Formerly, I studied under Donnie Bittner and currently am taking classes with Clare Zipperly. I also love taking advantage of the numerous workshops given by talented artists such as Janet Rogers, Peter Bailey and others. I am a member of Brevard Watercolor Society and the Strawbridge Art League. As I am also a licensed mental health counselor, painting is a valued hobby in that it is both therapy and a joy. I want the color to sing, especially through the compliments and variety in intensity, and the painting to come alive. I love to try and capture the beauty in our local area. Recently I’ve been drawn more and more toward portraits – especially painting animals (pets) and children (with 9 grandchildren there are numerous opportunities) as I attempt to capture their moods, their stories and their joy in living. I am also looking forward to doing some portraits on commission.
