Painting, for me, is an expression of emotions ranging from joy, sadness, inspiration or desire. When I am inspired or driven by my desire to paint from one of these emotions, my inner vision of that experience is expressed on the paper or canvas. The arts have always been a part of my life. Music was my first love. I discovered the love of painting in the early 80’s and realized “this is what I want to do in my life”. I am happy when I am painting.
My studies have taken me to Mexico, France and all over the US. I have studied with many signature members of the American Watercolor Society. I opened my first gallery in mid 80’s within a co-op home accessory business. I began participating in juried art shows successfully. Working as a professional buyer in a large chemical company gave me little time to paint enough to have product for the shows. The next step was to have offset lithographs printed of some of my paintings. This proved successful. I continued with studies and art shows throughout the United States. I decided to make art my full time profession, participating in the wholesale market in Atlanta, St. Louis, New York, Dallas and Orlando. In 1992 in Johnson City, TN, Phyllis Shpley Fine Art Gallery was opened. It was an exciting time. I have been fortunate to have won awards for my paintings and been blessed to have international, corporate and local customers I closed the gallery in 2001 after a personal loss.
I still continue with my passion for painting. My work also includes large paintings and murals from my inner visions or requested subject matter on a commission basis.
“Life is not a problem to be solved, but a gift to be enjoyed”. I hope that my art will be something that each holder will enjoy.
