CATCHING THE LIGHT

May 1 -31

Opening May 2nd 5:30-8:30

The Fifth Avenue Gallery is pleased to announce that Karen Leffel- Massengill, an award winning oil painter will be the guest artist in the month of May. Karen’s work focuses on the beauty of the landscapes in Florida with special emphasis on the value of light. Originally a watercolor artist, Karen brings the sense of beautiful light, shadows, and luminosity to oil colors. She uses soft but bold colors and is always looking to “catch the light”.

Karen knew she always wanted to be an artist but life, children, and a career in nursing kept her from her dream until the sudden death of her husband in 1995. To help with the grief, Karen turned to painting and soon joined the art show circuit. She has won many awards and her painting “Summer Light” appeared on the cover of Watercolor Magic magazine in 1998. She has also taught both watercolor and oil painting and the gallery will be sponsoring a 2 day workshop to be held at Ralph’s Art Supply May 12 and 13.

2 Day Oil Painting Workshop
May 12 and 13

Cost $225

The Fifth Avenue Art Gallery will be sponsoring a 2 day oil painting workshop May 12 and 13 at the Ralph’s Art Supply located at 1420 Highland Ave. Melbourne, Fl. ( phone# 321-255-3331).  A supply list is available; click on the link below, stop by the gallery or pick on up at the art store. A $100 deposit will be required to reserve your spot. The workshop will be limited to 12 artists.

This workshop will concentrate on color, values, brushwork and design. Karen will go over color charts so students learn the ins and outs of color mixing exactly what color they want the first time, thus saving time and money. The purpose is to avoid dirty colors or “mud”. Participants in the class should bring 6-10 photos of scenes that excite them and they will choose 2-3 to paint. Karen will be teaching the “block in and refine” method of painting. She will demonstrate and work with painters on an individual basis. Students should finish 1-2 small paintings. The goal of the workshop is to “get the light turned on” in your paintings.
