Exhibition Opening: Friday June 7, 2013
5:30-8:30

We are excited to announce the upcoming solo-exhibition for Michael Robinson; last years 2012 100% Pure Florida Juried Exhibition winner for Best of Show.

In Robinson’s hands glass is not worked or manipulated but transformed into designs that suspend time. Captured in this exquisitely unforgiving medium is a portal into the mind’s eye of this talented artist. Entry may take us to a distant windswept shore – or result in the quiet contemplation of a single perfect bloom – or plunge us into the depths of that remote region known as inner space.

Robinson states, “I have found glass to be an appropriate medium to express the forms found in nature – the fluid motion of wind and water and the shapes of the creatures that inhabit those realms –because glass echoes nature; it is enduring but fragile. Careless action can destroy a glass object (or a natural ecosystem) that would otherwise exist for eons. Here we have the underlying voice of glass”.

Whew! What an exciting March it has been at the gallery! Months and months of planning and coordinating… 24 artists, 24 hours, 24 works of art to raise money and awareness for Very Special Arts Brevard. We are so fortunate to have partnered with Brandt Ronat & Company to capture the artists and their approach to the challenge in an amazing documentary about the project!

We had a wonderful premiere and gala reception on Friday, March 15th and thus far have raised over $4,000 for VSA Brevard. Thanks to all who participated… the artists, the filmmakers, the merchants who donated items for our raffle baskets and our wonderful patrons who bought tickets!

The documentary really pulled the project together. The 24 artists worked separately…in their own studios and homes and did not, for the most part, have much interaction until after the challenge was over. We talked to them about art and it’s effect on their lives and all the connections are captured on film.

You can watch it now, then stop in the gallery or call to order a copy! $10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3cLM3hDI84

April 1—April 28, 2013

Gallery member artist Jini James is exhibiting in a solo show for the month of April. James has created all new works in oil from her “endless list” of visual inspirations from the Chesapeake Bay, the American Southwest, Central America, Paris, and Iceland. Her first painting trip was to Honduras, loaded down with a heavy French easel and at least 30 tubes of oils, plus canvases. “The exploration of Mayan ruins in Copan, Central America was a life-changing experience,”says James. “Through art, I realized how cultures survive. It was the artists who recorded Mayan history in stone. I also learned that with each subsequent trip, I packed lighter and lighter until watercolors and mini sketchbooks took the place of the oils, canvases, and an easel. ”My watercolor studies, along with photographs, translated into oil paintings when I returned to my studio,” says James.

In her artistic endeavors and travels, James has received numerous awards and signature memberships in the art world. Her training began in her teens when she studied privately with a well known New York Illustrator and progressed to study at Moore College of Art and The Pennsylvania Academy. Her passion for life long learning includes workshops, “for that once or twice a year tune-up”. “I am a believer in craftsmanship and preserving reality while allowing the viewer to see the painterly strokes that are laid into the piece. These are story paintings.”

Painting Giveaway!

The Gallery desk will be distributing free raffle tickets, one per person, from April 5 until April 13 for this lovely painting by Jini. You must be present at the Second Saturday Art Talk to win.

SECOND SATURDAY ART TALK

James will also discuss her work at the gallery’s Second Saturday Art Talk on April 13 at 2 p.m. Thoughts about painting on site as well as creating a good composition will be discussed along with a painting demonstration. Arrive early as seating is limited.

Last Friday and Saturday the 24 participating artists took the challenge! They received an email early morning of their workday with a list of prompts… words and phrases like: “echo of a dream, fresh, song in action… They chose three from the list of seven and started to work on their art piece. They had 24 hours to create a work of art. The 24 pieces of newly created art will hang at the gallery during the month of March. What a Difference a Day Makes: 24 Hour Art Challenge will benefit Very Special Arts Brevard their website through sales of the work. The artwork will be sold via a “guaranteed raffle”. All Big Ticket holders will choose an artwork from the exhibit.

To add to all the excitement of the challenge, we enlisted Brandt Ronat and Company to document the artists efforts on video. Each artist was visited during their workday and caught on film; the footage will be used toproduce a documentary about the project.

The exhibit will open for the general public on Friday March 1, 2013. The film premiere and gala reception will be held on Friday March 15, 2013. Tickets are available at the gallery and online. Are you coming to the film premiere and gala reception on Friday March 15th? Better get a ticket. You can check out the lists of artists and buy your tickets here .
